Cleaning Campaign of the Lucre-Huacarpay Swamp
How travelers, residents and local organizations can protect one of Cusco’s most important high-Andean wetlands.

The Lucre-Huacarpay wetland is a living classroom: migratory birds, native plants, farming communities and visitors all depend on its health. Cusco Mio joined a community-led cleanup to turn responsible tourism into practical action.
Why this wetland matters
Wetlands regulate water, shelter wildlife and preserve cultural landscapes. Small pieces of plastic and unmanaged waste can travel through channels, affect grazing areas and remain in the ecosystem for years.

A campaign built with the community
Local participants divided the shoreline into safe working areas, separated recoverable material and recorded the most common waste. The aim was not a one-day photograph, but useful information for prevention and future education.
How visitors can help
- Carry a reusable bottle and refuse unnecessary packaging.
- Stay on marked paths and never disturb nesting birds.
- Take every item back to Cusco if no proper bin is available.
- Choose local operators with visible environmental practices.
Responsible travel continues after the cleanup
Cusco Mio will keep sharing low-impact guidance with guests and supporting local initiatives when a visit can contribute without disrupting community priorities.
