Machu Picchu Mountain vs Huayna Picchu
A clear comparison of difficulty, views, trail style and permits for Machu Picchu’s two famous mountain hikes.

Both mountains add a memorable hike to a Machu Picchu visit, but they feel very different. Your ticket circuit, tolerance for exposure and preferred pace should guide the decision.
Machu Picchu Mountain
The route is longer and generally wider, with sustained stone steps and broad views over the sanctuary. It is demanding at altitude but often feels less exposed.

Huayna Picchu
Huayna Picchu is steeper and includes narrow sections close to drop-offs. The perspective looks down into the citadel and creates a compact, intense climb.
Side-by-side
- Choose Machu Picchu Mountain for wider panoramas and a steadier climb.
- Choose Huayna Picchu for a shorter, steeper and more exposed route.
- Neither is ideal when mobility, vertigo or recent altitude illness is a concern.
- Both require a specific timed ticket.
Tickets and timing
Availability changes and spaces are limited. Match the mountain ticket with the correct Machu Picchu circuit and train schedule before paying.
Our recommendation
If this is your first high-altitude hike, prioritize the main citadel experience. Add a mountain only when your timing and fitness allow you to enjoy it without rushing.
Plan the citadel, transfers and guide as one coordinated experience.
