Five Tips Before Taking the Inca Trail
Five practical decisions that make the Inca Trail safer, calmer and more enjoyable.

A successful Inca Trail experience is usually decided before the first step. These five actions prevent the most common avoidable problems.
1. Book early
Permits have daily limits and are assigned to passport details. Secure the route before building non-refundable flights around it.
2. Acclimatize in Cusco
Spend at least two easy days at altitude when possible. Sleep well, hydrate and avoid turning arrival day into a fitness test.

3. Use appropriate footwear and layers
Test boots before travel and prepare for sun, wind, rain and cold evenings with a simple layering system.
4. Learn to use walking poles
Rubber-tipped poles reduce strain on long descents. Practice adjusting and planting them before the trek.
5. Pack the essentials, not the entire suitcase
- Water and purification plan.
- Sunscreen and hat.
- Headlamp with spare power.
- Rain shell.
- Personal medication.
- Small cash for appropriate local expenses.
Check dates and prepare with the team coordinating your permit.
